While most patients respond well to cortisone injections, the duration of relief is dependent on underlying cause of the inflammatory condition. Depending on an individual’s problem, as a general rule, if relief is short-lived (less than 3-4 months), an alternate treatment option may be more beneficial. However, if a patient gets 5-6 months benefit from an injection for their arthritic knee, repeated injections may be a reasonable option.
