Works for 75% of patients but takes up to 60 days

Once oral medications fail to adequately control pain, because Hyalgan is administered via a series of three injections, with maximum benefits not realized for up to 60 days in some cases, cortisone (anti-inflammatory) injections are usually the preferred treatment option as they are administered as a single injection with fast-acting effects.

In our office, Hyalgan, however, does seem to benefit about 75% of patients with arthritic knees. As with any medication or treatment, the significance and duration of therapeutic effects are varied and are dependent on severity of joint degeneration; the typical patient enjoys anywhere between 6-12 months of improvement, with some patients experiencing years of relief.
