What is manual therapy and is it different than physical therapy?

To be more specific, manual therapy is a sub-specialty of physical therapy (PT).  Manual physical therapy is a training or philosophy of PT that focuses treatment with the use of the physical therapist's hands. The object is for the manual therapy is to deliver skilled passive movements in order to restore motion to affected joints, muscles and facilitate normal coordination of muscle contractions.

This emphasis of physical therapy literally offers a more "hands on" approach to the patient's recovery process.

As a physical therapist I believe that manual therapy skills are important with every physical therapy program. Rarely will an injury not require some manual therapy. If your PT does not include some aspect of 'hands on' treatment, find a new PT!
