Kinesio tape allergy?

We got this question from a sportsmedinfo.net visitor about Kinesio Tex Tape.

Question:

I have a telfa allergy.  Is this tape [telfa] allergy free?

Here is the answer from our kinesiology tape expert, Joanne's Stapenseo, MA Exercise Physiology.

Answer:

Telfa consists of a thin layer of absorbent cotton fibers, enclosed in a sleeve of polyethylene terephthalate (a type of plastic). Both SpiderTech and Kinesio Tex Tape are made from 100% cotton with an acrylic adhesive. Both tapes are labeled as hypoallergenic.

A few individuals with very sensitive skin have had minor reactions (itching, rash) to kinesiology tape, but it is extremely rare. It’s always a good idea for people to try a test strip for 24 hours before using anything on a large area.

Unless you are allergic to acrylic, you're probably OK to give it a try.

Kinesiology tape is 100% cotton and rarely causes any adverse skin reactions. Try a test strip if you know you have sensitive skin.
